Buy a NAS. Put a hard drive in it. Use the mac to copy the files from the broken external drive, over the network, to the NAS.

Then the windows machines can see it - and you're all back up and running. Problem solved.

Perhaps it's the tense of "had" that is the issue; replace it with "acquired" -- nm
