I wear them into the house, then take them off when I get into the bedroom.

I use slippers in cold weather, wear socks only in warm (because the a/c vents are in the floor). In comfortable weather I wear flip-flops.
I would never ask a guest to take off his/her shoes - unless he/she was an overnight guest.
