Sorry, didn't mean to be glib. It's all a matter of budget. Last time we stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge which was cool in its own way. Each Disney resort is cool in its own way.
Disney rooms are notoriously small. It's a trade-off. You get kitsch in exchange for floor space. We were two adults and two small children, and it was snug. And this is a Disney *DELUXE* resort. The older the resort, the more likely you are to have a larger room, so the Contemporary Resort - the one with the monorail going through - is a good choice. You just have to be sure to get a room in the "tower" and not one of the "wings".
The Polynesian is another monorail resort (it's DELUXE category), and more kitschy than the Contemporary. The last monorail resort is the Grand Floridian, which can be considered SUPER-DELUXE. Which is not it's the exclusive domain of the rich and famous. When we stayed at the Contemporary, we saw George Lucas with his two daughters.
Fort Wilderness Lodge, Boardwalk, and Animal Kingdom Lodge are among the DELUXE resorts which are not attached to the monorail system.
There's numerous MODERATE resorts which have more of a "motel" feel (no indoor corridor, everything is accessed through the exterior balcony). And the BUDGET resorts are even more so. As with the DELUXE resorts, the older the hotel, the more likely you are to have more floorspace. That's because they can change the carpet, the wallpaper and the furniture, but it's hard to knock down walls and make rooms smaller. Old doesn't necessarily equate crappy, though, since Disney is always refurbing their rooms. In the past, they've switched from Queen beds to Twin beds, but in the most recent generation of refurbs, they've switched back to Queen beds. It was straight staying at Coronado Springs (a MODERATE) because the headboards were clearly intended for Queen beds, but the beds were Twins. That's one way Disney was making the rooms look bigger, by making the furniture smaller.
And that's all I'll say about it right now. If you want, I can write a book about it! Or just send you an e-mail if you e-me at rburriel-at-hotmail.
