I think the success of Android is what spells the end of AT&T exclusivity for iPhone.

iPhone runs the risk of irrelevancy if Apple waits to break exclusivity for too long.
Android will set the expectations for what a smart phone should be in the consumer's mind and Apple will have to exceed that to succeed.
Apple is approaching the point where "It's an iPhone! An *iPhone*!" won't carry enough weight to overcome a par-for-the-course OS and hardware.
