They've done quite well building a desktop/laptop business because PCs still have issues that Apples don't.

Viruses, etc. I think Apples are overpriced, but they do offer something different and, in some cases better, than the PC.
I don't think the iPhone is going to have the same experience. It trades too much on the aura of Apple without very many (soon possibly no) advantages over an Android phone.
With smartphones it's going to be all about the carrier and the plan because every phone will be able to match the abilities of almost every other phone.
Stick with AT&T too long and users on other networks will need a BIG reason to switch from Android to iPhone once it's available on other networks
