Responses:
and your basis of Cahill being less than Liriano is based on the strikeout?

Popups are almost equivalent to Ks. But Cahill isn't getting a ton of popups, he's getting a ton of gound balls.

one half a runner per inning less makes up a lot of ground.

If the question is: Are Cahill and Liriano both good pitchers? The answer is yes.

Not really. A pitcher's job is to stop any runners. A strikeout gives you basically a 0 EV of bases.

no, it is putting the value in the ON BASE, and not in the whiffs.

No it's not. Pitching is different from hitting. Pitchers rely on defense to get outs. Hitter rely only on themselves to hit the ball.

you are ignoring the on base to concentrate on whiffs and HR allowed.

yes, I do, but when discussing "best pitcher" they have to factor in somewhere. nm -- nm

although, i'll through this out there: if you're talking "best pitcher", then that has to account for results, not expected future performance.

That's a fair point. Forward vs backward looking makes a difference. (nm)

point taken, but other than whiffs, where is Liriano better than Cahill?

Preventing HRs. Cahills been good at it, Liriano's been *great* at it. (nm)
