I took what happened to Ruffalo's character to be just a portion of his life. We were really seeing just a slice of their lives.
As Diva pointed out to me, Laser needs Ruffalo's character and there's nothing to suggest that what we saw at the end for Ruffalo's character is the end of the story.
I thought it was pretty amazing.
