You're right about the work ethic, though I don't think that was it alone. The year off from competitive football totally screwed him. If he were continuously in a program, rather than left to his devices, I can't help but wonder if things'd be different.
Remember that discussion we had one time about Dwayne Jarrett vs Steve Smith. That was the dichotimy right there. Jarrett had way more physical tools, but Smith had the effort, smarts and desire. Smith was the guy who was always more likely to succeed on Sunday.
