I'd say the high end of average is about 8 1/2 lb. Daughter was 8lb 10oz...quite big enough :) -- nm

google suggests the average birth weight in the US is 7.5 pounds. (but I'm not getting a good primary source for that) -- nm

I guess we don't do 'average' babies. Daughter was big, but her two were both below average.
