more volume of water coming down the river because the build up of levees from Missouri on down, the water used to flood fields, now there are towns and high walls, so that water rushes down stream with more force.
loss of barrier islands means less and less to hold back and/or absorb tidal surges, they used to break it up, slow the winds,
the ground has sunk/receeded.
