supposedly she's not-so-loosely based on Dr. Joyce Brothers, who apparently did that kind of market psychology on Madison Avenue back in the 60s. i don't think Dr. Joyce is gay afaik

i think she's there to help Don, somehow, merge his two personalities back into one whole (hopefully more healthy and empathic) person
