i thought the point was showing that, contrary to much of what we had been shown in the beginning, it was Dexter who made the choice at the last possible moment to beg off dinner with the family and spend the day with Emma. he was the one who chased her down in the street.
the point being i suppose that in reality he was the one who fell first, despite it all starting out as just another in his usual parade of one-night conquests
