http://www.dvdbuyingguide.com/ has decent reviews and http://www.regionfreedvd.net/ is a good starting place to find models that you can hack and that have the crucial pal-to-ntsc conversion. my region free player is a sylvania of some sort, but i dunno the model.
a *ton* of r1 players have codes to make them region free (nearly all players start out region free at the manufacturer and are crippled via firmware) but built in pal to ntsc not so much.
