I understand that. Had a similar conversation recently.

I was told by my old volunteer boss ( I was a volunteer) I was accused of some nebulous thing by...(I wasn't told who, but I knew), and then I told her that I would never do anyting to do any kind of damage. Then I was told I might have. I asked if I had done whatever I had been accused of and was told I hadn't but I might have (circular argument by that point) and when I pointed out again that I hadn't done whatever it was I had been accused of I was told I was getting defensive. Damn right I was.
