Given the focal range of my lenses out to about 20ft, the video function works very well in situations at that distance or where the subject isn't moving closer/farther from you. I wouldn't use it as a general purpose camcorder for a party or something but for capturing your kid events, it works much better than I expected. So much so that I expect to rely on it over my camcorder for soccer games, etc. Pictures are awesome, of course.
