FWIW, I agree with you. There is an implied insult that someone would be stupid not to believe in God in what is often spoken by religious people

I've said it and I've come to realize it. There's much more to it than that. Many people have rejected religion and God simply based on interactions with religions people. That's a much bigger problem.
