I think this is right. It also is a sudden event that grabs attention, whereas the floods build over time. It's really gotten far less coverage here

Honestly the floods barely hit my radar. I don't think people appreciate how devestating it is either since we've all probably experienced some level of flooding and dealt with it. An earthquake has a different sensory appeal because of its suddenness. Certainly the response to the tsunami in southeast asia got the same response as Haiti.
