I wasn't certain of it, but IIRC it was actually not for any specfic story reason, it was a shot at the network by Joss

I could be wrong, but I heard the way the cancelling of the show was handled and how it was done was not to his liking, and this was an inside dig. I don't know the details, but that's what I heard.
