Yes, averging would find the mid-latitude, but why then cosine that?

That'd be able to generate the straight line distance to the equator with some manipulation, I think, but overall there's too many moving parts without knowing what's what. It might work, but you should ask the guy who wrote the formula, it'd take him 2 secs to tell you what's what, for me it'd take me half an hour to check the math.
