i can see why people might find the pacing and story on the languid side, but most of the criticism for people who panned it seems to be (spoiler)

not being able to get past the fact that these kids know what their fate is and don't try and escape it
which, to me, is the entire point of the story. why don't any of us do the same thing, when faced with a life of routine
