Could be a virus, but they don't actually even need to have been hacked. It's simple to fake the From address.

Though that's more common when it's your address in the from line since you get the bounced e-mails back. If they're coming from people you actually know then the person could have gotten a virus, or it could also be that a mutual friend got a virus and it's using a name from their address book for the From address and sending it to everybody in the mutual friends address book.
