party's candidate is clearly the less qualified of the two major party options in an election, he will be more likely to vote for the Republican.

If the Republican doesn't like his party's candidate, he is more likely to stay home on election day and not vote.

This was explained to me some time ago by The Man Who Supposedly Knew What He Was Talking About
