IIRC, the phrase is supposed to originate from one of Wagner's operas, probably "Gotterdammerung" from the Ring Cycle, which ends with a very hefty soprano singing a final aria dressed in the stereotypical Viking garb and holding a spear.
However, being overweight is actually counter-productive to being a good opera singer (at least from what I learned on the History Channel).
