TTIS: I've been invited to a "gift exchange" with some friends I don't see much. Last year it was not labeled a "gift exchange" and I showed up empty

handed. so embarrassing. So I've been invited back (why??) and this year they are being explicit.
My problem: I don't really want to go to all the trouble/expense of giving gifts to each of these people, though I would like to hang out with them for a party kinda thing, and this is likely my only shot. It is way too late to suggest a secret santa or gift swap, because I was told in the invite that some people had already purchased gifts for me.
Any thoughts how to handle this? The options I have come up with are:
a) Don't go, then have to deal with people playing phone tag while they try to meet up to give me the gifts they already bought (this has happened before)
b) Go empty handed, feel embarrassed
c) Go with gifts, feel coerced and annoyed
d) Talk with hostess and tell her I'd love to go to the party but the gift thing is not on my menu this year, and risk offending her and throwing the party into chaos (only a slight exaggeration of something that happened before)
