Thoughts on losing a beloved pet and what it means for the next one.

I hadn't had pets for a while (moving around a lot in the military and traveling all the time because you work in tech will do that), so I was happy to have my first corgi and really bonded with him. Unfortunately he had a sudden unexpected health problem and had to be put to sleep. In that horrible 36 hour period I kept wishing I had more time to spend with him. He had a good life with me, and even though it tore me up for a lot longer than I thought it would. I got another corgi about 2 months later.
Now I know it's like a cliche, but I treat the new dog like I don't know how much time he has left, even though he's around 5 and should have plenty of time. I've found I spend more time with him and appreciate him more because of losing the first one. It's made me a better dog owner.
Losing a pet sucks. But it gives you a better perspective when you get your next one.
