well that's the alternative, innit?

It's the same idea as many many other countries in the world where they have one leader appointing the other. Like, Israel, where the President is almost entirely ceremonial and picked by the PM. Ours just happens to have the backing of someone who wears a crown. It's not like we haven't thought about it, but it causes zero problems, so we have no desire to change it. Besides, the monarchy is very, very popular here.
