yep - auto companies have had their problems for 20 years. and also, a lot of people seem to have had bad customer experiences with them, GM...

This is anecdotal of course, but a lot of people in my office tell stories about themselves or their parents and how they were with Ford or GM for twenty years, but then they bought a car in the 90s that needed an expensive after 20,000 miles and the car company wouldn't do anything, and the customer eventually switched to Toyota or Honda. There's a definite lack of sympathy from former customers
Not to discount the other factors mentioned elsewhere in the thread though.
