This is what I think the new "groups" thing is very interesting. You could be in a group for your family but not be friends with any of them

It really is making it possible to take a line on Facebook and say "Look, my *friend* list is only for the people I am truly close friends with. Everyone else I'm in a group with based on my association with them (family, school graduating class, etc) and you can still give/get information from them just as easily"
