Well, I *am* looking for fiction here...


spoilers - genetic scientists find a gene cluster they decide to tinker with, and end up inadvertently turning people into Neanderthals. The theory being that some of the 'junk DNA' we have in our system (that we don't know the purpose of) contains a record of former 'versions' of our species that the scientists accidentally 'activate'.

Scientifically ridiculous, okay. Too implausible for a Dan-Brown-loving audience, do you think?
