What they think happens in PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) is the stress hormones of the stressful event cause a deep memory. Then as you relive the memory you produce more hormones that make the memory even more vivid.
You get stuck in a cycle of bad memory, making hormones strengthening the memory more, over and over. A vicious downward spiral.
