Schlitz (famous case of marketing/production disconnect) and,sigh...boone's farm

schlitz had a major problem and died because of a disconnect between their production dept and their marketing. Modern formulas/recipes are like sacred, but in the old days they would alter the recipes according to prices of barley and hops, expected sales and the economy. there was a recession in the 70's and schlitz brewers figured they would cheapen the produce, pour in a lot more rice and less barley and hops.. BUT the marketing department got the message that they should put ads in that it was a premium product, it took a years head start to put stuff in place, no computers and email, and consumers just stopped buying it.
