There's a time line about half way down this article. But basically Hicks & Gillett have used increasingly more desperate measures to halt the sale.

If the sale isn't achieved by 5pm today the club is put into adminstration and gets docked 9 points making it likely that the club gets relegated resulting in the loss of about �400m in income and forcing the sale of players.
