If they are actually following any rigorous method of investigation, then they look for mundane explanations

as well as paranormal ones.
So, yeah, they'll come check out "odd noises", but if they find it's caused by air in the pipes they'll say as much.
I don't believe in the paranormal so I think what they do is bunk, but that doesn't mean it can't be done in a strict and rigorous fashion.
