In response to "The difference is the Rap group Beastie Boys did 'Sabotage' and VH is a rock band. " by Mel Profit

I guess that's the crux of my point: does the identity of the group supercede the elements of the song?

Beastie Boys are undoubtedly a rap group. But "Tough Guy" and "Heart Attack Man" and "Sabrosa" and "Futterman's Rule" are in no way rap songs (as just some examples. So where does "Sabotage" lay on that spectrum? It has rap vocals, but much much shorter verses than any other analogue of rap music of the period. And many hardcore and punk type bands had incorporated rap vocal styles into their songs by the 90s as well. I bet you could find lots of examples of songs not by rap groups that sound a lot like Sabotage.
