Well, I have one foot in the 21st century - almost.

Decided to upgrade my cell phone service to Virgin's Beyond Talk plan that includes unlimited text & data for $25. Four years ago I got my first cell phone - just a basic flip-type. Got the cheapest plan I could get for 2 lines. Never got into texting and refused to pay extra to connect to the web. Every time I get the phone bill (it bundles my landline, cells & DSL) I grumble about the cost and how confusing Cincinnati Bell's bills are. Every time I heard they were offering a better deal I tried to get it. Still, I'm paying over $130/month. Right off the bat with Virgin I'll save $10/month. Of course, that doesn't take in the cost of the new phones. But I'll have more service than what I'm paying for now. Got the LG Rumor Touch. I would have loved to get the Android phone but it was hard enough paying $150 for the LG (the Android is $250).
Spent most of the afternoon trying to get set up to port my #s over to Virgin. Spoke to 4 Virgin reps, all of them obviously not born in the US. 3 of the 4 were really great. The 2nd one's English was very hard to understand & when he started throwing attitude when I kept asking him to repeat what he said that I lost it and told him to get me someone who could speak English. I can't believe they had that guy on the English line. I speak with people from all over the world nearly every day on my job. I've always prided myself on my ability to elicit information from a caller who wasn't a native English speaker so I could help with a problem. If I hadn't gotten 2 excellent reps later I might have taken the phones back to Best Buy and said "screw you" Virgin.
OK, rant over.
Never did complete the activations. Cincinnati Bell seems to be playing some kind of game with Virgin in that I have to call Cincy Bell to get an account # to give to Virgin so they can port my #s. My account # is on my bill & I gave that to Virgin. The last Virgin guy I spoke to said it had too many #s. *sigh* I just know Cincy Bell's doing this so they can talk to customers who want to switch and try to get them to stay. Well, it won't work. They don't have any plans that come anywhere near being as good as Virgin's.
Next up, I'm looking into alternatives to DSL so I can drop my landline, too. Cincy Bell doesn't do naked DSL and, while, I could get cable for internet, I'm stuck paying for Directv as part of my lease (bulk rate for my building split between the apts). So cable would increase what I'm paying now. Maybe when Cincy gets 4G I might get Virgin's mobile hotspot. Then I'll have cut the phone cord completely.
