Yeah, not cardboard. Many, many people have hand forged blades or high quality prop sidearms

These are not plastic Halloween store gags but legitimate weapons that must be treated as such.
Rules are in place for the same reason rules are in place at trap shooting events. The weapons are real and if handled inappropriately people WILL get hurt or killed.
