I know I've mentioned a letter written by my great-uncle while he was fighting in France in 1918. I just found the transcript.

Dear Ollie,
Just a few lines but I hope it will not be to much of a shock for you. I would have written before but I did not know your address. Ern got it once from Grace but when he went to write he could not find it so I suppose it must have went west, but any how Rose sent it on. Rose had rather a long holiday with you but the poor kid wanted it, hers is a bonzer kid & a good job as it is something to keep her mind occupied. You are giving some of us something to do to keep up with you, I think it is nearly time you had a spell to let some of us catch up. What is it five in the lead, I thin we will give you best for I dont think we will try to catch up. How is Tom keeping still lucky enough to keep out of this, & I hope he will keep out of it for this is no place for him. I only wish I could get out of it, but I suppose we are here & we got to make the best of it, & I dont think it will last many more months.
Ern & I thought of coming up to see you when we were on our six day leave last year but the time went so quick that we had to go back before we had time to see anyone. We should get our Blighty leave any time now but I dont expect it before Christmas but when we get it dont be surprised to see us, as we have to go to London from here & we may run down before going home. Ern & I are both together & as been together from the start & we have both been very lucky.
Joe seems to be the most unlucky one of the lot, but I think this time he is right for the winter & they may turn him out altogether, or I hope so. We have been out for a week or so spell & had a good time but we are back hard at it again now. I had a letter from Bertha a week ago they are both keeping well she says. Marj is getting a big girl & getting a real trick. I dont suppose I will know her when I get back for it is nearly eighteen months since I left the west.
Now I mus ring off but I will write again when I have more time. Hoping this will find you and all in the best of health as Ern & I. Give our love to Tom and the kiddies & the best of love to your dear self. We remain you loving
Bros. Arth & Ern.
