What you say at the start is a lot of the point of the first hour of the film in my estimation. Their tiny kernel of an idea had gone absolutely nowhere for the body of that year. They were on their (fourth?) programmer without any forward progress. They were a non-factor in terms of idea. The way they motivated him was through his desire to get past the lobby of the Porcellian, which was something they flatly denied him.
What I love about the story is that some random lovesick kid was as instrumental to the success of Facebook as anybody. He was the one who put that tiny flicker of an idea about "in a relationship" in Zuckerberg's head. While Eduardo's seed money was more key to my mind than you see it, Parker's tutelage in angel funding and even his suggestion to drop "the" from the title were not as important as the one guy with a crush.
And your last sentence is exactly why I love this story. It had to happen organically with a few key developments on each level. If the first woman we see in the film had been drunk and horny that night rather than in a dumping mood, MySpace may still rule the land.
