I'm trying to project the reaction if the valedictorian had been a supporter and used the podium to support the guy & condemn the protesters outside.

Can never prove it of course, but my hunch is that it would be a much different reaction. (And I'm sure that even if he had no idea she would say that, that many would just assume otherwise and condemn him ever more.)
