It's a whole quality of life thing. If I'm forced to sit and listen to one album all the way through while doing nothing else, my quality of life is going to be diminished compared to listening to the best-of selections of 15 different artists while I do other things. If I took the captive audience approach I'd never have time to be exposed to all the other high points out there that are available. I just don't see the comparison to a novel or a movie. An album is a collection of songs, no matter how much the artist wants it to mean something together.
