I'm not sure I understand, but I do a Conditional Formatting in Excel 2007.

Highlight the column, and click Conditional formatting (on the Home tab in 2007, I think it's under tools in 2003). I use a lot of "is greater than" or "is less than" and create my own =IF(THIS,TRUE,FALSE) statements by creating a New Rule.
