Well you could rent it out after you move somewhere else. When I was in the military, lots of officers bought knowing they would transfer in 2 years

Also if you live in a large enough metropolitan area, you can stay in the same house. Since I bought my place in Silicon Valley I worked for a start up that moved twice to new locations, then went to grad school, had a consulting biz, and now I work at a college...all within 25 miles of my house.
