there's no national pride or space race now to get to Mars. There are vital R&D projects that exist without the massive expense of NASA.

If you got money to burn, by all means, burn it on trying to visit Mars, but hoping that you'll solve real-world, real-time problems in the off-shoots of that investigation seems ass-backwards to me.

Solve the current, break down the long-range.
