more importantly, having journalists do actual reporting on their subjects would endanger the very access to those subjects that gives them anything

to report in the first place. So they parrot whatever they're told in order to maintain that access. See Glenn Greenwald's regular, and imho justified, rants on Salon.com for more thinking along these lines.
