I guess it comes down to : I want the govt to solve finite problems and I don't see NASA solving that niche at this point.

They research and develop and any gains are scattered in whatever they advance in and then we fill in the utilization of those advances.
Going to Mars or the moon now isn't a problem to solve in light of crumbling infrastructure, energy concerns and such.
I want targeted solutions, whereas NASA is a shotgun approach. Some might hit targets, but the resutls are spread out.
