This is the link that discusses his promotion. At the time, he had been offered the Falcons job and one other (Miami?). Dallas kept him with the understanding that he was the head coach in waiting. I have been under the impression that this was written into the contract but in this story, he specifically denies that. In this article, LP points out that his pay structure on the deal made him higher paid than several NFL *head* coaches.
