he'd signed all the cheques. my boss half recognized/half deciphered the signature.

the cheques hadn't been cancelled either, since the receipt with all their numbers on it was in the envelope too.
it probably just sat in the filing cabinet for 8 years and was shipped to us with the rest of the files. sloppy that nobody bothered to check the sealed envelope to see what was in it though. you should always be sure what data you're giving away.
