I didn't like Marty because his ego (not gamesmanship as he claims) got in the way of keeping Jimmy J around, which I think the older tribe needed. It was a knee jerk reaction on his part, which you see played out with others (like Tyrone from the clips show), where he just can't handle anyone else having any authority, or the appearance of authority, at all. He needs everyone to be his puppet, and to me that's not leadership.
I certainly did become more sympathetic towards him at the end, still think him giving up the idol to Sasha was dumb though. His mini-feud with Jill, more so than his butting heads with the Sasha/Brenda alliance is what had me somewhat sympathetic to him; I think everyone from the cast are having eye opening moments re Jill, and just what a despicable person she is. To me, she's a fake. She tries to come off as this sweet old country girl...but she's not. Not even close. I wonder how the cast will respond to, if it's brought up, her sneaking off into the woods and keeping food for herself.
So yeah, I started off really disliking Marty, but once the merges started to happen, and the other group dynamics started emerging, and the fact that he was actually playing the game, my dislike for him wore off quite a bit.
