It's quite noticeable when you go from reading great authors like Saylor and Harris to a mediocre one like Loomis...

I've read Saylor's Roma and Harris' Imperium in the last several weeks. I'm now reading Loomis' Gates of Hades. The difference in the quality of writing is vast. And then there's the way Loomis writes a characters accent/lingo. For instance when you write a character saying "fookin" I'm picturing an Irish guy, not a Hispanic guy named Paco.
