ESPN has a good story on how Monday Night Football scooped the John Lennon slaying.

A local ABC tv producer had a motorcyle accident. He was at the same hospital in the same hall where John Lennon was brought into surgery. A police officer in shock accidentally revealed to him what was going on. He notified someone who notified the production truck. They found out the story with less than a minute to go in a tie game. Howard Cosell being friends with Lennon made the situation awkward. He didn't think they should interrupt the game to discuss it. Frank Gifford said it was the right thing to do. So, as the kicker came out with 3 seconds to go to attempt the game winning kick, Cosell broke the news.
